The Trail of the Lonesome Pine ('16)

1
The fact that a heavy tax - levied during
the Civil War - on all whiskey distilleries
has never been lifted, has led to an endless
warfare between our Government and the
"moonshiners".

The latter maintain their ancient right
to operate without a license - and defend
this belief to the death.

2
"Devil" Judd Tolliver

 Head of the Tolliver Clan

   Theodore Roberts

3
      John Hale

District Revenue Officer

    Thomas Meighan

4
      Dave Tolliver

In love with his cousin June.

        Earle Foxe

5
Charlotte Walker

      as

 June Tolliver

6
The District Revenue
 officer takes charge
   of a difficult
      situation.

7
   We know Tolliver is back
of all this "Moonshining."
   But he's slippery as an
eel, and not afraid of God
or the Devil!

8
   We haven't been able to
locate their whiskey "still" -
and somebody is keeping
them posted on every move
we make.

9
   I'll scout the trail alone.
Any order you get from me
with a "cross" on it - reverse.
That'll prevent spying.

10
Hoe-cake!

11
   Lem says there's a new
Revenuer comin' up the trail.
We got to git him to
the cabin, so's we can tote
this whiskey down below.

12
I'll git him to the house
fer ye!

13
   I'd be pow'ful grateful,
Suh, if you'd help me to
yonder cabin.

14
   We'll tote the whiskey
on down the mountain. You
can sleep that Revenuer in
the cow-shed.

15
How's the ankle?

16
They do say I make the
eatin'est hoe-cake - - if yo'
all care for it.

17
Contraband.

18
Pleasant Dreams!

19
Morning.

20
   I cain't work and hold
this gun. If yo' all would
give yo' word not to leave
that chair - I could go on
spinnin'.

21
The Secret Tunnel.

22
After this - yo' can talk to
the prisoner in the cow-shed!

23
Maybe I can talk to yo' -
now the company's out of
the way!

24
   I reckon I am jealous,
Honey - - 'cause I love you!

25
   I'll short-cut him - yo'
ride like tarnation was after
yo' to warn your Pappy!

26
The Race.

27
   That Revenuer got away
from us - and Dave's taken
the short-cut to head him off!

28
What I want to know -
is who lit his pipe?

29
If yo' all is lookin' for
the Sheriff - he has gone
across the mountain with
the rest of the posse.

30
   We've had our eye on
old Hawkins' deserted shack
- it's a likely place for
"moonshiners."

31
   Yo' boys take one load
of stuff with yo' to the
wagon - we'll follow.

32
   I don't budge from here,
Pappy, 'till yo' go!

33
Drop that gun!

34
Shoot!

35
   You can't shoot me - -
because you love me!

36
   I reckon I do love yo' - -
but I'll shoot your head off
- if yo' cross that door!

37
   They won't hurt me,
Pappy - I'll keep 'em busy
'till yo' get away!

38
They went that way - but
the slippery devils blocked
the end of the tunnel!

39
   You Boys take the
wounded man back - I'm
going on alone.

40
   Don't stop riding until
you reach Sheriff Heaton
and give him this!

41
   Yo' all might be needin'
your pipe!

42
The Spy.

43
I can't read.

44
She can read - and rote too!

45
   We got to know which
road that Revenuer's taken -
so's we can ambush him and
kill him!

46
It says he's goin' - by the
North Trail!

47
I've sent them into the Posse!

48
The North Trail.

49
   We'll larn him to keep
out of our business! Tote
him to the cabin.

50
We'll take the South Trail!

51
It's Pappy!

52
   He's goin' to bleed to
death! Will yo' go for help?

53
   We didn't go down to
invite him up to tea!

54
   'Peers to me yo' mighty
anxious to save the life of
your Pappy's enemy!

55
   I love him more than
home - more than my people
- more than - - God!

56
The Meeting Place.

57
We'll wait for Hale here.

58
He's still alive!

59
Do yo' love me - Dave
Tolliver?

60
If yo' do love me - I'm
askin' yo' to ride for a doctor!

61
Judd would kill me!

62
   Don't fail me - Dave -
don't fail me!

63
Dave Keeps his Promise.

64
   I wouldn't let a Tolliver
get to that village tonight
for anybody!

65
Don't fail me - Dave!

66
Can yo' doctor people?

67
Yo' might like to know that
your Revenuer is bleedin' to
death at our cabin!

68
At Daybreak.

69
Whar's Dave?

70
   The Posse's caught Dave -
but they've got a flag of truce!

71
   Will you grant me a
parley of five minutes inside?

72
How did the varmints git yo'?

73
I brung 'em!

74
   We outnumber you three
to one - you don't stand
a chance!

75
If you insist on fighting -
we'll wipe you off the earth!
But if you give me your
word to quit "moonshining"
- I'll let you go.

76
   I reckon when a man's
own folks sell him out -
t'ain't no use!

77
   There'll be no fight -
return without the Tollivers!

78
   There ain't never been a
Tolliver who was yellow -
and there ain't goin' to be!

79
I didn't - fail you - - Honey!

80
Time's Healing Power.

81
I'm coming back - to make
June my wife.

THE END
